Life

Currently: August 2020

Welcome to August! Here’s what’s currently going on in my life this month.

Current joy Gardening. Walking out to the garden to see how all the fruits and vegetables are growing is one of my favorite parts of each day.

Current book The Story of My Life by Helen Keller.

Current memory verse Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

Current indulgence Walking around a store by myself. Jimmy put Sadie to bed last night and I spent a while just walking around Target and totally zoning out. I came home with a box of cereal and Jimmy was like “That’s all you bought after all that time there?!” haha. He didn’t understand how I can go to a store and enjoy just looking at stuff without the pressure of a fidgety toddler.

Current cuteness Seeing Sadie with her cousins and friends at the Youth Summer Days our church had at a local park yesterday. The time with other moms + watching Sadie enjoy the park and her friends and family = a winning combo for us girls.

Current mood Reflective. I feel like I’m due for a post on my thoughts about motherhood lately because they’ve been swirling in my brain lately and I need to write (type?) them out.

Current craving Time with Jimmy. He’s planning on taking a staycation at some point soon and I cannot wait. Can you tell my love language is quality time? 😉

Current fun I painted Sadie’s toenails for the first time the other night!

Current food Bunny grahams have been super tasty in a bowl of yogurt before bed each night. Also loving English muffins topped with runny eggs.

Current blessing Help from family. I went to the dentist the other day and my mom offered watched Sadie for me. It’s such a blessing to have help and love from my family! Just knowing that my family wants and asks to spend time with my child is such a wonderful feeling ❤

My mom and Sadie are bffs. Also, us girls have gone to stores together and had people ask if Sadie and I are both my mom’s daughters. We always get a good laugh out of that.

Current drink Starbucks Veranda Blend. I know a lot of people think Starbucks coffee is a bit bitter, but I’ve found this blonde roast to be extra smooth.

Current prayer For Sadie’s eye to heal. I mentioned she has a nasolacrimal duct obstruction and was prescribed some antibiotic eye drops to try and treat it. I’m praying the drops work so we don’t have to do anything more serious.

Huskies and Cats + Back Patio Progress

One of my biggest worries before we brought Niva home was that she wouldn’t get along with Malcolm. I’ve heard that Siberian huskies and cats aren’t a good mix because huskies have a high prey drive for small animals. It was definitely a gamble to bring Niva home to a cat without knowing how she or Malcolm would react, but we had a few things going for us:

  • Niva is a very submissive dog
  • Niva is a puppy
  • Malcolm is a very friendly cat
  • Malcolm has been raised with dogs

It’s totally true that Siberian huskies have a high prey drive. They are also pack-oriented dogs. I think Niva saw Malcolm as part of her pack when we brought her home, so she doesn’t hunt him.

If you’re considering bringing a husky (or any breed of dog, really) home to a cat or vice versa, I would take into account each animal’s age and temperament before making any decisions. It’s definitely possible for cats and huskies to live together, and it’s amazing to watch them play and live in peace and harmony when they do!

Okay, onto our back patio renovation progress. I wish I had more before pictures, but I snuck into my archives and found this one below from a post I wrote in 2014(!). Our back patio area had wooden railing and a canopy with wooden beams and a ceiling made out of…. I don’t know?!

We eventually took the old canopy down and would put up the one below when we had gatherings at our house.

Jimmy took down the old railing and posts and put up steel beams.

He then painted the beams, made and painted new railing, and added some landscaping.

Then, it was onto the canopy! It looked like this on Saturday before the boys got to work.

Next, we will be working on a little outdoor kitchen area. Can’t wait!
