All of the Things on My Mind Today

I feel like my brain has been in overdrive lately. There’s a lot going on and this is my favorite place to let it all out. Here are some thoughts. None are very deep and all are pretty random! Let’s do this.

Girl sitting in car seat

–> Sadie went to gymnastics camp loved it! When she was a baby and wouldn’t take a bottle, I thought I’d never be able to leave her side. It was weird to drop her off somewhere for two hours a day last week. She’s a social butterfly, so I didn’t worry about her. I missed her, though!  If you’re in a parent in a tough stage: it will change and a new season will come.

–> I clipped the kids nails the other day and it took me a solid 20 minutes. Is it just my children or do all children think you’re cutting off a limb by trimming their fingernails?

–> I always mean to mention this: Mordecai’s ears are shaped so uniquely. When he was born, one of the first things I said was “What’s wrong with his ear?” lol. Turns out they’re just… different!

–> Speaking of Mordecai, people ask me all the time if he’s a boy or a girl?! Having a baby and being pregnant are the two times in life when everyone you meet will comment on something about you or your child. At the same time, I will be so sad when Mordecai isn’t a baby anymore. He’s just so snuggly and sweet!

–> The ice cream truck has been in our neighborhood a few times in the past month and it has me wondering… are ice cream trucks solely an American thing? Do kids run up to musical trucks to buy ice cream in other countries?!

–> Same with s’mores. Are s’mores popular abroad or are they just an American thing?

–> I’m getting my hair cut this week! The last time I had my hair cut was two days before Mordecai was born. I remember it really vividly because after the appointment, Sadie accidentally kicked my stomach (explanation in this post, lol) and I cried nonstop for hours afterwards. I was thinking: I hope I’m not that emotional after my haircut this week 😂

–> Jimmy surprised me for my birthday and is getting us a hot tub!! Actually it’s my birthday and our anniversary gift for like the next few years because hot tubs aren’t cheap but I’m so excited!

–> The pottery that Jimmy and I made was all ready to be painted last week so Jimmy’s sister watched Sadie and we took Mordecai with us (we didn’t want his sister to be overwhelmed) and let me tell ya, it’s hard to bring a baby to a pottery shop! He happily sucked on a paint brush for a bit and then he was trying to grab everything 😆

Notice how I’m standing? That’s because babies have this rule… you’re not allowed to sit. Ever.

–> One of my biggest fears is not hearing my kids cry in the night (because I have hearing loss) when I’m the only parent in the house. When Jimmy was visiting a friend a couple of months ago I had the kids sleep with me so I wouldn’t miss them crying. We slept over my mom and dad’s house recently and my mom had to wake me up in the night and was like “Mordecai has been crying for the past ten minutes?!” lol. On Friday, Jimmy and Sadie slept in a tent in our yard while Mordecai and I slept in the house and you better believe I had Mordecai’s baby monitor turned allllll the way up and had it right next to my head.

–> I was reading through the notes app on my phone and I had written this down a while ago and wanted to share because I always need this reminder: your struggle isn’t your identity.

–> Mordecai’s therapy for his arm weakness has been going well. The physical therapist recommended putting him in a laundry basket with toys to work on some of his motor skills and he looked so cute!

Do you have any weird fears?

When was the last time you were surprised?

  1. Most all people have a fear of something (or we just wouldn’t be ‘normal’) I have a fear of going skiing (water or snow) – I just don’t want something strapped to my legs- and also kayaking (once again- my legs being confined) I’m probably missing out on a lot of fun- but those things just aren’t for me.
I have smaller surprises come in my life quite a bit (when grandchildren make me the sweetest gifts that I will forever treasure, tickets to see Eric Church 😎, etc) but my latest BIG surprise was prob you telling me you were expecting (our little Decky). Birth announcements are the best surprises ever ❤️

    1. I didn’t know you had a fear of skiing!! Now I feel weird about it, haha. I have been kayaking and it was a little scary to get trained to roll and get out of the kayak. Have you seen the ones where your legs aren’t confined? I think I could do that and feel better about it!

Aww, yes! Surprises are the best! Especially pregnancy ones!

  2. We have ice cream trucks in the UK too, although the language differs slightly — we call them ice cream vans here. In fact, as I type this comment, I can hear one in the distance haha. It’s definitely ice cream weather here! The UK’s experiencing a heatwave at the moment, with temperatures in the high 20s (low 80s Fahrenheit).

I can’t speak for other countries, but s’mores aren’t really a thing here. I only know about them from American TV and movie scenes where people roast s’mores around the campfire.

I’m glad Sadie enjoyed gymnastics camp. It’s amazing how quickly they grow up and start to become more independent. I see that with my nieces (my sister’s children) — the eldest is 13 in September and I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone.

Writing a reply to your letter is on my list for this week. I know it’s been a while! Looking forward to catching up and sharing stories from my hiking adventure in Greece. Hope you’re having a lovely week 🙂

    1. This was SO interesting to me! Ice cream vans! How wild that s’mores aren’t really a thing in the UK. Have you ever had one? They’re a unique taste but absolutely wonderful in my opinion. Americans go crazy over s’mores and make everything into s’more’s flavor (brownies, cereal, cookies, pies, etc.).

It truly is wild how fast a child becomes independent. People told me Sadie would become more independent, but in those early baby days I found it hard to imagine. I can’t believe your oldest niece is going to be 13 soon!!

I got your letter this week! Can’t wait to write back! I need to get some cute stationary like yours 🙂

      1. I’ve never had s’mores but I’d be curious to try them. I’ll have to look online and find a recipe. I had no idea that s’mores were such a popular flavour in the US. I’m trying to think if we have something similar in the UK 🤔 Marmite-flavour items are a thing here, but the marketing thing for Marmite (a yeast extract spread) is that people either love it or hate it! I’d say I’m kind of in the middle haha.

I’m glad it arrived! 🙂 I love buying pretty stationary so it’s nice to have an opportunity to use it 🙂
