A Good Deal Kind of Day

I knew today was going to be a good day when I started it off with a coffee date with my Dad! We went to Starbucks before he had a work meeting and spent some time talking and enjoying our coffees.

Man in Starbucks with large iced coffee

A large iced coffee for my Dad and a Reserve coffee brewed in the Clover Brewing System for me! I explained what’s so special about the Reserve coffees and Clover Brewing System to my Dad and he just smiled and called me a foodie, haha. He did try my coffee and said it was very smooth compared to Starbucks’ “regular” coffee!

Okay, confession time. The last time I had my hair cut was in June, before my sister’s wedding. It was looking… hmm, what word am I looking for? Gross? Stringy? Frizzy? You get the point.

A girl I pet sit for is a hairdresser, so I went to her to get my hair cut today and it feels so much better. I think she said she cut three inches of dead hair off! She even texted me a before and after picture.

Curly hair Deva hair cut before and after

The hairdresser used DevaCurl products and technique to cut my hair (DevaCurl is a whole system of haircare exclusively for curly-haired people!) and it really made a difference in how defined the curls look.

She wanted me to try DevaCurl products so much that she generously gave me a free full-sized bottle of shampoo and conditioner. You better believe I tipped her more than 20% 😉 I also made sure to just book another haircut right then and there so I don’t go eight months without a haircut again.

DevaCurl shampoo and conditioner

Okay, so onto why today was a good deal kind of day. I went grocery shopping at our local grocery store, Shop ‘n Save, which I believe is a chain with stores in the Pittsburgh area only.

I’m usually a tried and true Aldi girl, but Shop ‘n Save had some amazing deals for four days only, so I braved the crowds and I’m glad I did. I was so pumped about some of these deals that I decided to take pictures. Here’s some of what I bought!

Toufayan Pita Bread, rigatoni, and chocolate pudding from Shop 'n Save

The Toufayan Pita was $0.88, the rigatoni was $1.00, and the chocolate fudge pudding was $0.88. I was honestly so surprised at the price of the pita bread. I am already dreaming up sandwich ideas 🙂

Jif peanut butter and Salada black tea bags

The Jif peanut butter was on sale and I had a $1.00 off coupon, so each jar was $1.17. The Salada tea was buy one, get one free and each box ended up costing $1.75.

Cheese Nips and hot Italian sausage flavored potato chips from Shop 'n Save

Onto the snacks! The Cheese Nips were $1.00 and the hot Italian sausage flavored potato chips were $1.50. I literally have no idea what made me buy hot Italian sausage flavored chips. I’ll let you guys know how they taste, LOL.

Ground chuck and eye of round steak on sale from Shop 'n Save

Okay, meat time. Ground beef was $1.99/lb and I bought almost three pounds for $5.87. I see either stuffed peppers, meatballs, mini meatloaves, sloppy joes, or stuffed cabbage (a Pittsburgh classic!) in mine and Jimmy’s future 🙂

The boneless round steak was on sale for $2.98/lb and I got almost a pound and a half for $4.08. I’m thinking I might marinate it in a combo of soy sauce, Italian dressing, and brown sugar and then plop it on the grill and call it a day.

Fresh loaf of Italian bread and baby back pork ribs

The baby back ribs were $2.69/lb and I got a little over 2 pounds for $6.35. I’m going to use my favorite (and easy) barbecue ribs recipe from Genius Kitchen for these. The loaf of Italian bread was freshly baked and only $0.79!

Eight pound bag of Green Giant Russet Potatoes

This eight pound bag of russet potatoes? $1.98. I might make homemade gnocchi, mashed potatoes, or potato skins with these. Or all three and more since we now have eight pounds of potatoes…

Chobani whole milk greek yogurt drink coffee and cream

Last but not least, this Chobani coffee and cream whole milk yogurt drink was free with a coupon! Chobani actually has the coupon on their website right now if anyone wants to print it. They’re offering a free yogurt/yogurt drink/etc. until March 4th, so there’s still time 🙂

Whew, if you made it through this post I am in awe of you!

Really, though, it was fun going to a different grocery store and finding deals. It makes me feel so blessed that I live in a country where we can simply go to the grocery store and buy food and that we have the means to do so. Saving money on groceries allows us to use our extra money to give to missions we love and support those in need, and for that I am so incredibly grateful!

Have you found any good deals lately?

  1. WOW! you did find some great deals!! I’m totally craving one of those chips right now though 😦 I really need to get your rib marinade/rub recipe, as Dad loves ribs!!!
On to your hair — IT LOOKS GORGEOUS!!!! I’m so glad you’ve found a good hairdresser our your way, although I really do miss the times you, Hannah and I all went to Janet in one appointment and literally spent all afternoon there! Maybe we’ll have that opportunity again someday! Can’t wait to see how you like the Devacurl products!!
    Love you girlie!

    1. You got to have some of the chips haha! You thought they were spicy but good! I will send you the rib recipe if you want?

Thanks for the compliments on my hair! I’m glad I finally took the plunge and got it cut!

I miss going to the hairdresser with you and Han, too! Fun times! I’d love to do it again soon 🙂

  2. Those are awesome deals! I buy a 5 lb. bag of potatoes for about a dollar more than what you got 8 lb. for. Way to bargain shop.

Okay I got my hair cut last weekend and it was the first time since April…so bad I know. Please report back on DevaCurl! Help a curly hair girl out hehe.

    1. Aww, thank you Maureen! It was so much fun going and sleuthing out the deals haha!

Yay for both of us getting hair cuts! So far, the DevaCurl products are great! It’s definitely hard to get used to them not sudsing (if that makes sense) since they’re so natural, but they seem to make my hair smooth and manageable!

  3. I really like this post and seeing your groceries and the prices for them. I figured you shop sales but I guess I expected groceries to be more expensive there? I’m gonna have to check out that Chobani coupon now because that drink looks tasty.

Also if you coupon, the Ibotta app is really good sometimes and I think it has that free chobani offer on it. I’ve been using it a lot lately

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Amy!! The groceries in PA don’t seem to be too bad! I was just watching a YouTube video of this couple that moved from Los Angeles to Charleston and said they were glad the groceries were cheaper, but they weren’t as low as they thought they’d be. Do you think Charleston is expensive in terms of groceries?!

I love Ibotta! I just started using it a month or two ago and I’m hooked!!

  4. So many good deals! I really want to know how those chips taste, though! That seems like something I would buy just to try. 🙂

And yay for a new haircut! I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of the new shampoo/conditioner!

So glad you got to spend some quality time with your dad! Reserve stores are always my favorite because they do such a good job with all of their drinks. 🙂

    1. The chips were spicy!! But distinctly like hot Italian sausage, which was interesting!! Definitely something different and fun to try!

The new shampoo and conditioner have been great! Yay!

I love Starbucks Reserve! I really want to go to the Reserve store in Seattle some day!

  5. I love scoring awesome deals at grocery stores. That’s why I love Grocery Outlet whenever I get the chance to go. Thanks for sharing the Chobani coupon!

  6. I haven’t gotten a good deal at a grocery store (because I haven’t been grocery shopping in weeks lol) but I did get a $1 muffin at my favorite cafe because they were “too ugly to sell”. I am a huge fan of ugly!

  7. My goodness, those deals are INCREDIBLE! Great choice with bravery the crowds because those deals are so good you just can’t pass them up! That’s so fantastic! Also, you’re not the only one who was overdue for a haircut…I haven’t had one since April, oops. I’m so lazy about getting my hair cut, lol.
