The Early Days

Hi! Sorry for disappearing. Jimmy and I have been caring for and soaking in our sweet girl and I haven’t had much time to blog! In fact, I’m blogging from my phone while feeding her. We’ll see how this goes 😉

I started a draft of Sadie’s birth story, but I just wanted to share some thoughts and pictures from our first few weeks with our little one today.

1. Jimmy is an amazing dad.

I had no doubt he would be a rockstar dad, but experiencing it in real life has taken our relationship to a whole new level.

He was so solid during Sadie’s labor and delivery, which was crazy… like let’s just say we had the paramedics called twice and I took a ride in an ambulance and Jimmy took it all in stride, no problem.

Seeing him hold Sadie for the first time made my heart nearly burst with joy and love. I get the same feeling each and every time I see them together.

He is so supportive, hardworking, loving, and has taken such good care of us girls since Sadie’s birth. I feel crazy blessed that Jimmy is my husband and Sadie’s dad!

2. I love her. So much.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stared at my daughter and cried because I love her so much. I’m sure a lot of the crying is postpartum hormones, but I also know it’s just me realizing the fact that God chose to bless us with her.

3. Family is amazing.

Our families (and church family) have been so great. I’ve had help around the house, people holding Sadie so I can take a shower or eat a warm meal with two hands, laundry has been washed, meals have been provided, advice has been given, and encouragement abounds.

4. The pets surprised us.

Dogs and baby

We have rambunctious animals. That’s the best way I know to put it. I was pretty nervous to see how Lola, Malcolm, and Mavis would do with Sadie but they’ve all been great at sharing attention and their home with their new little sis.

That’s not to say I don’t have days where I’m completely overwhelmed by caring for a newborn, two dogs, and a cat. I totally do, but things have gone smoother than I expected!

5. She looks nothing and everything like I expected.

Like most expecting parents, Jimmy and I spent months wondering what our daughter would look like. When she was born, I thought of course that’s what she looks like!

I’ve also had times where I’ve looked at Sadie and have been surprised by her dark complexion, hair, and eyes. I can’t wait to see what she looks like as she grows up!

6. Our house is dirty and I’m getting nothing done and it’s okay.

Having clutter around our house drives me crazy. Lately, it’s quite the accomplishment if I wash and fold a load of laundry all in one day. Sure I miss having our home in order, but hanging out with Sadie is a much better way to spend my days. I’m slowly learning to surrender to the chaos of a new baby and all that it brings!

7. Fresh air feels wonderful.

I don’t think I left our house more than once or twice the week after Sadie was born. I’ve slowly been incorporating walks and small outings and I truly feel like a new person afterwards!

8. Childbirth is no joke.

Giving birth to Sadie was one of the most amazing, intense, and beautiful experiences of my entire life. With that said, it totally knocked me off my feet. Recovering from bringing a child into the world combined with sleep deprivation is tough!

If you were to come to our house at any hour the past few weeks, you’d probably find me asleep on the couch with Sadie on my chest and I wouldn’t have it any other way 🙂

9. We have no idea what we’re doing.

I’ve never had a baby before, so this motherhood thing is a whole new world. Jimmy and I are having fun learning what our sweet girl likes and dislikes and doing our best to care for her!

We have ordered some type of baby-related item from Amazon almost daily since she was born. It’s funny how you think you know what you need for a baby and then you have your baby and it’s totally different! I’ve never been more thankful for our Prime membership 😉

Well, I think that about wraps it up! I know I have other thoughts from the past few weeks but they seem to be escaping me right now so I’ll be back to share more soon!
