Scenes From Valentine’s Day + Two Trips to the ER

Well, we have had quite the week in the Zottola house! Our Valentine’s Day get-together was absolutely lovely.

Aunts and uncles with baby girl

We had Jimmy’s siblings and their significant others over for games, candy, and a dinner of grilled barbecue ribs, chicken, roasted potatoes, and salad with apple pie and cupcakes for dessert.

It was such a fun evening and had Jimmy and I wondering why we don’t do things like that more often!

We went to bed with full bellies and full hearts from such a fun evening. Jimmy and Sadie even made me a Valentine’s Day card together!

Jimmy said it involved a little crying on Sadie’s end, but oh will I be treasuring that card forever!

We woke up around 2:30 am thinking that Sadie needed to be fed, but she actually ended up throwing up and had a fever. We gave her Tylenol and rocked her back to sleep. She was so pitiful. The next morning she threw up again, so we headed to the pediatrician where she was diagnosed with the stomach flu.

We spent Friday just trying to keep Sadie girl comfortable. She slept most of the day and it just killed me to see her so sick and sad. Thankfully my mom was able to come over and help with snuggling Sadie.

That night, Jimmy started throwing up pretty nonstop. He couldn’t keep anything down, was shaky, and feverish. I called his mom and she brought him to the emergency room where he was given anti nausea medication.

Right when Jimmy got home from the hospital, I started throwing up. Thankfully Jimmy’s mom came over and took care of Sadie while Jimmy and I spent the day sleeping and getting sick.

At one point, I had a fever of 103 and felt so shaky. My mom and dad stopped by in the evening to help out with Sadie and by the time they left, I started feeling really awful.

I got up to brush my teeth before bed and passed out. Somehow, Jimmy caught me while he was holding Sadie. I have no idea how he did it.

He called his mom and she came to the emergency room with us and held Sadie while I was treated. Poor Jimmy somehow managed to carry me to the car when he must have been feeling so weak himself.

I was able to get two bags of fluid, anti nausea medication, and some ibuprofen before we were released a few hours later.

We think the combo of throwing up, not being able to eat or drink, and nursing Sadie was just too much for my body.

Whew. What a crazy past few days! We seem to be on the upswing and have even managed to eat some food! Sadie is still pretty worn out, but in good spirits.

We feel so incredibly blessed that Jimmy’s mom and my parents were able to help us out because we literally have no clue what we would have done being the sickest we’ve ever been while caring for our baby.

Unfortunately, my parents caught the bug and have been down for the count, which we feel so bad about. Somehow, Jimmy’s mom was spared, though, which is great news!

We are looking forward to a (hopefully!) uneventful week this week 🙂

Have you ever had the stomach flu?

Did you do anything fun for Valentine’s Day?

    1. You can say that again! Thank you for helping to take care of us, Dad. We couldn’t have survived without your help! We are SO sorry you caught the bug. Hopefully you’re feeling all better by now!

      Love you sooooooo much!

  1. Saturday was literally the longest day of my life! I wouldn’t want to be sick with anyone else though! We both managed to take care of each other in one way or another! 😄

    1. S e r i o u s l y … the longest day ever!! We kept sleeping and looking at the clock and it was like 2 minutes had gone by but felt like six hours, haha. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in the trenches with anyone else but you, babe!

Remember “What do you need?” “Ice Cube… the rapper” haha. At least we found some humor in it all!

Thanks for taking care of me and Sadie so well, offering me your Zofran, catching me when I passed out, and changing Sadie’s diaper while I puked. I don’t know how you did it all!! I love you so much! ❤

  2. Oh goodness that is a lot in one weekend! I’m so glad the stomach flu didn’t ruin your Valentine’s Day plans.

I got a stomach flu over Memorial Day in the middle of driving from Chicago back to New Jersey…It was not fun at all. Poor Alex was a champ dealing with me and taking care of little Bailey who was with us. I hope you’re all feeling better!

    1. It was quite the weekend for sure! I’m glad we got to have our little V-Day party before the bug hit, too!!

I feel SO BAD you got the stomach flu while driving from Chicago to NJ. I seriously can’t imagine how hard that had to have been!!

We are on the mend over here, slowly but surely!

  3. Oh my goodness, your poor family!!! I remember a few years ago (before Kaitlyn arrived), Brady, Nate and I all came down with the noro-virus at the same time. Nate ended up in the ER, and I was soooo sick while trying to care for Brady. Thankfully my mom helped a bit, but it was REALLY hard. So my heart went out to you while reading this. It is NO fun being a mom who is sick!!
Although I have to say that your husband catching you WHILE holding the baby is the thing that romantic comedies are made of. I mean, how beautiful is it that he carried you to the car and made sure you were taken care of (while he too was sick)? It’s like beautiful and miserable all at the same time. But he’s super-dad, and you are super-mom for SURE!
I hope you can all rest up, and I’ll be praying that you all are 100% very soon. Hugs!!!
P.S. Your Valentine’s Day sounded so lovely!

    1. Ahhh, so you can relate to all getting sick with noro-virus at the same time! It’s c-r-a-z-y, isn’t it?! It was so hard to be getting sick and feeding Sadie and trying to help Jimmy and vice versa. Whew. Glad that is done!

Jimmy LOVED your comment!! He smiled so hard and was proud you called him super-dad 🙂

  4. Oh my gracious! What a blessing to have parents close by to help out in times like this. I’m so glad you guys are all on the upswing!

  5. Oh my goodness!! I’m glad you guys are all doing better now but how scary!! What a relief to know that both parents could be close by to help out. I couldn’t imagine what you guys would have done otherwise! What a scary time, and for everyone to catch it so quickly–and violently. Wow, you poor things!

  6. Even though I got extremely sick~ I would do it all over again for you and your precious family. I
Love you all with all my heart!

  7. Awww what a fun get together with everyone!! That food sounds so yummy & I so wish I could reach out and have a slice of that apple pie.

Okay that card from Sadie is the cutest ❤

Wow- Allie my jaw is on the floor reading about your crazy trips to the ER. What a scary whirlwind! That must have been some bug. I am so so glad everyone is ok now!

    1. I wish you and DJ could have come over for dinner and pie! How fun!!

The card made me sooo happy! It’s one of my favorite things ever!

Ugh, those ER trips. Cray!! I’m glad it’s over now 🙂

  8. Oh you poor things! It sounds absolutely awful, and how scary to pass out. So glad you’re all okay now!

I had the stomach flu a few weeks ago, but fortunately it only lasted for a day. I was also feeling stressed about something at work and I seem to be more prone to getting things like that when I’m extra tired!

I hope you’re having a quiet, healthy week!

    1. Aww, thanks, Grace! It was definitely so awful and scary. Glad that is behind us and we’re feeling a lot better now!

I’m glad the stomach flu only lasted a day for you! It totally makes sense that you would get sick when you were extra stressed–ugh!

This week has been much more healthy and boring–in the best way! 🙂

  9. So sorry you’re whole family got sick!! But sounds like you have an amazing support system to get you through tough times like these!

  10. Aww. All of the food you made on Valentine’s Day looks amazing. Sounds like a such a fun day you all had!!

It is just so sad when babies are sick. 😦 I hope she is 100% now!! & oh my gosh, I am so glad Jimmy caught you so you couldn’t hurt yourself when you fell. What a guy!!!

Hope everyone in your family is done with this contagious flu now. ♡ I need to know what Jimmy’s mom does to have such a strong immune system!

    1. Thanks, Hunida!! We had such a great time and really enjoyed the food. Grilling everything had me SO ready for warmer weather, haha.

I’m happy to report that Sadie is feeling much better now–woo!!

I’m so glad Jimmy caught me, too. Like what would have happened if he wasn’t behind me?! Crazy!!

We are all feeling much better now!
