Whew, we had quite the day earlier this week. It started out completely normal… until we had an ambulance at our house.
Sadie was hanging out with me in our bathroom and fell backwards and hit her head. She falls all the time, so it wasn’t too big of a deal. She cried pretty hard, so I picked her up and snuggled her in my arms until she stopped.
About a minute or two later, I looked at her and she had blood coming out of her mouth. It was on her hand, her shirt, shorts, and face. I tried to check in her mouth to see where the blood was coming from but couldn’t find anything. I started freaking out and decided to call 911 because I wasn’t sure if she had a concussion or why she would be bleeding from her mouth after falling backwards.
The 911 dispatcher told me to call back if Sadie became unconscious and said an ambulance was on its way. Within a few minutes, we had a team of paramedics checking Sadie out and asking about what happened. They had me try and open her mouth and inside her upper lip we found a cut. I have never been more relieved for my child to be cut in my life!
The paramedics offered to take Sadie to the local children’s hospital but I declined since we had figured out she was bleeding from the cut in her mouth and not from a head injury, lol.
Sadie was playing on the kitchen floor while Jimmy and I were eating dinner that night and she stood up and took her first steps.
What a roller coaster of a day. I went from worrying that Sadie had a concussion to witnessing her first steps just hours later. If I’ve learned anything about parenting, it’s that the highs are higher and the lows are lower.
I would do anything to never have Sadie experience hurt–physically or emotionally. At the same time, I know that’s not realistic in this world and the trials of life develop our character. The lows of parenthood are tough. The highs, though? Wow. It’s amazing to watch this little being that God has blessed us with. We see her grow, learn, and develop right before our eyes and there’s nothing like it.
Just like God develops the character of our children through tough times, He develops their parents right along with ’em through all the highs and lows ❤
There’s no one else I would rather experience all of those highs and lows with! I love you and Sadie so much!! You take SUCH amazing care of her! She’s very blessed to have you as her mommy, and so am I to have you as my wife!!
Right back at ya, babe! I love you, too. So, so much. Thank you for saying I take good care of Sadie girl. You take great care of us! ❤
Crazy day!
Best picture ever!
The craziest! Thanks, dad! I love you!
Whoa! What a day. I’m so glad that it was a cut lip causing the bleeding and not anything more serious. You did the right thing by getting attention and help and experts out to do a check up right away though. Good instincts!
And wow! Her first step! That is so exciting. Good job, Sadie! Keep up the hard work.
It was quite an emotional day to say the least! I never thought I’d be so thankful for a cut lip, lol!
I’ll make sure to tell Sadie you’re cheering her on with her walking 🙂
That must have been so scary! I’m glad it turned out to be nothing serious.
Definitely a rollercoaster of a day. Yay, first steps! Soon she’ll be running everywhere. My nephew is a year old and is already up on his feet. I got my sister some corner guards to put on the furniture which is at toddler head height – they’re little cushioned pads that stick to sharp corners to help prevent bruises.
Have a lovely weekend 🙂
It really was incredibly frightening! I was so, so thankful it was just her lip bleeding and nothing worse. Whew!
I’m sure your sister is so thankful for those guards for your nephew! I’m probably going to need to look into those soon!
Hope your weekend was awesome, Grace 🙂
Oh my word, how scary!! So happy to hear that Sadie was only cut and nothing more severe. I could not imagine how you felt.
Yay for taking her first steps! She was just proving to you and Jimmy that a cut wasn’t going to be stopping her 🙂
It really was crazy scary thinking she was seriously injured! The relief I felt when I found out it was just a cut was so overwhelming! In a good way, lol!!
You’re so right! She bounced back from that cut way faster than I did and I wasn’t the one who fell and hit my head!
I remember vividly that when my little Rachel was about 10 days old I was getting her capsule out of the car. It’d been raining and the pavers were slippery. my feet when from beneath me and I dropped the capsule! It fell about 5 feet but happily stayed the right way up. Rachel, naturally, howled blue murder and so I took her inside and cuddled her till she calmed down.
Looking back, she was almost certainly fine, but of course as a first time parent you worry about everything and so The Ex and I agreed that I’d take her round to the emergency department at the nearest hospital while she stayed home to look after Grace. I learned two things that day –
1. The positive: Coming into Emergency with a child where you worry there’s a head injury means you go straight to the front of the queue.
2. The negative: If you’re the child’s father you’ll get lots of judgy looks and questions along the lines of ‘so you “dropped” your baby?’
Happily, Rachel was perfectly fine, although I remember that when the doctor took her little singlet off and started poking and prodding her she gave me a look that, even at the age of 10 days, said “the indignities I have suffered today will not be soon forgotten!”
Oh wow, I can’t imagine how you felt as a father of a ten month old and taking her to the hospital while your ex stayed home with Grace. You must have felt so many emotions all at once!
I’m glad you were able to go straight to the front of the queue with Rachel! Ugh to the negative about what you learned that day. My in-laws had a similar experience with my husband when he was a baby. They actually had child protection services called on them by the hospital–eek!
I’m laughing about the look Rachel gave you. I am starting to know that one all too well!
Oh my!! What an emotional, roller coaster of a day! I’m so glad she was okay AND so exciting that she took her first step!
It was quite a crazy day! So many ups and downs and emotions. It all ended happily, though!! ❤
Aww I’m happy she just got a cut in her mouth & it wasn’t anything serious. Phew!! I can’t believe she just got up & took het first steps on her own. Woohoo!! 😄
Same here!! And watching her take her first steps was amazing!
Oh my goodness, how scary!! I’m so glad you all were able to locate the cut and that it wasn’t a head injury or anything serious. And then how exciting that she took her first steps. Such a whirlwind of emotions, I’m sure! ❤
It was so scary! Thankfully all was okay in the end! Totally a whirlwind day emotionally!
Wow, sounds like a DAY! Glad she’s okay and that she’s started walking! 🙂
It really was, haha! I was so thankful she was okay, and then she started walking. Whew! So crazy!
Yes. God uses our kids to grow us, too! So glad that she is ok!!!
Amen! Thank you, Cece! I’m so glad, too 🙂
Its so dreadful day…I’m really to hear about her first steps !!
Blessings to your family…
It was quite crazy! It was great to see her take her first steps. Blessings right back at ya, Athira! Thanks for your comment 🙂
You’re welcome Allie !
