Mavis’ Surgery and Books

Our little Mavis girl was spayed on Monday and it was a tough day. I cried leaving her at the vet that morning, and I cried when I took her home. She did great throughout the surgery, but was super scared and shaky when we brought her home.

She’s doing a lot better now, and I think the hardest thing for her is just resting instead of playing all the time like she’s used to. The vet told us to keep her activity level to a minimum and have a cone on her for 14 days. Eek! I bought her an elk antler to chew and play with to keep her busy, but I know I’m going to have to get creative with things for her to do to keep her from running around the house!

We also put a smaller cone on her since she wasn’t able to eat or drink without someone holding the dish for her. It’s a lot to handle with checking her stitches each day, giving her medication, and keeping an eye on her, but we’re glad the surgery is done and over with now!

Doesn’t she look like a little walrus with her elk antler? Also, that’s her “mommmmm, play with me!!” face.

Okay, onto books! I have kind of been in a reading rut lately, and I’m not sure if it’s just because I’ve been busy, or just haven’t found any good books since I finished The Magnolia Story and What Falls from the Sky.

I’m currently reading Present Over Perfect and enjoying it (though I don’t agree with the author’s view on baptism, salvation, and a few other faith-related things). It’s definitely inspiring me to take more time to just “be” instead of do, if that makes sense.

I also just picked up Grace, Not Perfection and Fitness Junkie, which are totally different but sound equally interesting!

I received a surprise package in the mail from Rach recently, too. She sent baby books for our daughter! I totally cried while reading them (I guess crying is just my thing lately!) and was thanking God for such a sweet friend.

One last thing in the category of books. I found a sermon notes journal on Amazon for a great price and I am loving it!

I’m definitely one to take notes during church sermons and really enjoy going back and reading them throughout the week. I usually just use a plain notebook, but this journal has really upped my note taking game!

I think that’s everything for today. I was looking through my pictures for this post and came across this one below and it totally has me wanting Starbucks.

It was a decaf vanilla latte. Something about their foam, with the smooth espresso and vanilla flavor just gets me. Yum. No other coffee shop makes lattes like Starbucks! They’re always spot-on, every. single. time. but also come with the price tag for that type of quality, haha. Definitely a great treat from time to time 🙂

Do you have a go-to order or favorite drink at Starbucks?

Have you read any good books lately?

  1. I’m glad Mavis’s procedure went well! I totally thought Bailey was going to get a cone but our vet only gives them out right away if they notice to dog trying to lick/chew/scratch the stitches right away. Keeping such active pups relaxed is hard!! I think it’s harder on us than them since we just want to play haha. I just keep saying it’s better for the pup to be a little sad with no playing but healthy then have to go to the vet for a popped stitch.

My go to order at Starbucks is usually an unsweetened passionfruit iced tea. Sometimes I treat my self for an iced (or hot if it’s cold) chai though! So darn delicious!

    1. Thank you, Maureen! Me too! You’re kinda lucky Bailey didn’t get a cone, haha. They’re a pain to deal with! I hope she Bailey girl is healing up well 🙂

It really is SO hard to keep puppies relaxed! Way harder for us than them for sure! Plus I totally feel guilty because I know she’s so confused as to why we aren’t going on our daily walks, lol! But you’re right, it’s better for them to be sad for a few days than have to deal with re-stitching or staples!

I’ve never had Starbucks cold teas but I always hear they’re really great. I forgot about their chai! I used to looove their chai lattes! Yum 🙂

  2. I just read a book called Deep Dark Blue by Polo Tate. It’s a memoir of her time at the Air Force Academy, and she was raped. It’s a sad book but she overcame so much to be successful after leaving the school.

I’m really glad Mavis’ procedure went well. It makes me sad to see her wearing the cone, though! Starbucks is good, I like the skinny vanilla latte or the skinny mocha frappe.

    1. Wow, that book sounds sad but powerful at the same time. I think I’ll have to add that to my to-read list ASAP.

Isn’t Mavis just pitiful with the cone?! I like your Starbucks orders! I’ll have to try the skinny mocha frappe sometime. Sounds divine!

  3. Oh sweet Mavis! I hope she is continuing to heal okay. That picture of her with the elk antler is hilarious, though! She totally does look like a walrus, haha!

I’ll be curious to hear what you think of Present Over Perfect after you finish it. It’s on my to-read list!

Aww, yay! I love seeing those books in this post! I was so glad to see Found & I Prayed for You on your registry because I love them so much. And the Mama Loves You So book is just SO good. Really all three of those are favorites in this house! I’m so excited that our girls will grow up reading the same sweet books filled with wonderful truths. ❤

I like your sermon notes journal! I've always used whatever journal I pick up at the time that has a design I like. But I am loving the florals on that one!

And girl, I love a decaf skinny mocha with coconut milk. I get the same thing every single time.

    1. Thank you, Rach! She is getting better and better every day and her walrus look just kills me! Love it!

I will do an update or let you know about Present Over Perfect! I keep meaning to read her other book (Bread and Wine) since you recommend it! I need to add it to my library list!

I totally added Found and I Prayed for You based off of one of your posts about baby books and I’m SO glad I did! And Mama Love You So… oh my does it get me emotional! In the best way :). I also love that our girlies will grow up reading and hearing these amazing, beautiful truths!

If you’re ever in the need of a sermon notes journal and want a cute, fun one, this is it! It was less than $6 and is organized with a little section for the scripture, notes, sermon title, and date!

A mocha with coconut milk sounds SO good right now. Something about chocolate and coconut is just the best! I need to try that ASAP!

  4. Aww poor Mavis, but he has the best momma to keep him comforted through the scary times! you always have the best reads, and this sermon journal is AWESOME. I just got to the end of mine, so I’ll have to check this one out 🙂 XO

  5. It was sooooo sad to pick up your spunky little Mavis with you from the vet– but even more sad to see you cry… I honestly had a hard time fighting back tears too — but I know she’s probably almost back to normal by now, as she’s such a healthy little girl! The pic with the elk antler though- I seriously LOL’d for 5 straight minutes.

Thank you soooooo much for surprising me with the same book you have to take notes on during sermons!!! I REALLY NEED ITTTTTT!!! It will definitely help me learn and focus more on God’s word!!

I can’t wait to read all of the books to our precious granddaughter!!!

As far as Starbucks – you know I’m TOTALLY a DUNKIN GIRL — but ‘Bucks does have an awesome Skinny Vanilla Latte – the best in the business! I agree – it’s always perfecto!

    Love you,
    Madre

    1. Sorry you had to see all that crying! It was such a rough moment! Thankfully she is much, much better each and every day! Thanks for being there for support, mama! That elk antler has definitely come in handy 🙂

I’m so glad you like the sermon notes journal! Yay for surprises 🙂

I cannot wait for you to read to baby girl, either! I am sitting here smiling just thinking about it!!

Yay for Starbucks vanilla lattes! I think you got me into those, haha!

  6. Aww poor Mavis, such a sweet little girl! It’s always hard to help them through the surgery, even though you know it’s so important for them. Thankfully our vet doesn’t require cones (he says he does a type of “inside stitches” so they can’t be pulled as easily), but it’s still so sad to see our poor babies after the procedures. I don’t think I’ve ever just tried a latte from Starbucks, but now I really want to! My go-to currently is probably their ultra-caramel frapp, but it changes with the seasons, lol. During the colder months, I love their white hot chocolate or white mochas!

    1. Exactly! Couldn’t have said it better myself! I know in the long run, I’ll be happy she went through the surgery. In the moment, it was totally traumatic haha. She’s fine now, thankfully! I am jealous your vet doesn’t require cones and does inside-type stitches! That’s amazing!

I hope you get a chance to try a latte from Starbucks. They’re great! Jimmy loves their ultra-caramel frapps and their while mochas! You two must like the same type of flavors!!

      1. I did get to try a latte from them and I agree, it was delicious! I will be getting another one sometime, haha. Recently, I also tried their Pink Drink, which was incredible! It was like a light and refreshing smoothie. 🙂
