Summer Bucket List: Fishing

We have a summer bucket list hanging on our fridge and one of the things on it that the kids have really been wanting to do is go fishing. We finally did just that!

We chose a pond close to our house and kept our expectations low. But honestly? We had a really good time!!

As soon as we cast our line, we were getting bites. It was exciting for all of us to see the bobbers start moving! Jimmy was the only one to actually catch a fish, but we all enjoyed ourselves regardless. The kids thought the fish was really cool. Mordecai said “It tickles!” when he touched it 😂

It was the perfect summer evening: the sun was shining but it wasn’t overly hot. The pond had that specific, not unpleasant fishing smell–kinda a mixture of muck and dirt. It made me think of my childhood and all the times my parents took my siblings and I fishing. Memories 🥰

The kids were interested in putting bait on the hooks, casting, and trying to reel in fish! There was also a machine where you could put a quarter in and buy duck food. They were equally entertained with trying to make friends with the ducks as they were with fishing!

I know the days of summer and the kids being this little are so fleeting. I tried to just soak in every moment. Soon we’ll be in a new season and they’ll be a little bit older. If I’ve learned anything about parenting, it’s to just appreciate and be present in the moment I’m in.

As if the evening couldn’t get any better… it did. Because we stopped for ice cream at the country store on the way home! We even gave Dakota a little ice cream on our fingertip. It’s crazy to think next summer she will be enjoying her own dish of ice cream along with the big kids!

It felt great to check something off our bucket list and make some summer memories as a family 🤍

Do you like to go fishing?

  1. I truly love this post (I def teared up a couple of times). I have so many memories of dad baiting your hooks, teaching you all to cast your line, and the dreaded tangled fishing hook in a tree above our heads, or a stick in the pond/lake.
You’re exactly right about enjoying the moment you’re in- as they do go by so quickly.
I love fishing! I def prefer fresh water over salt water, mainly due to the fact it’s easier to figure out if you’re getting a bite or if it’s just the waves 🫤

thanks for all the great pictures, and bringing me back to the days of you and your siblings creating similar memories together!

    love you,

    Madre

  3. So important to have kids have a hobby that is outdoors. Fine little perch their on the hook. I take my grandson once a week, we documented a whole year and you can see the results of that if you wish on my site. Trick now is to keep your little ones interested until they are older. Well done.
