Low Key

How was your weekend? We had a low key one over here. Lots of snuggles, decorating for Christmas, hot tub time, and watching movies.

After I hit publish on this post, we had to wake Mordecai up from his nap because he was sleeping for such a long time and we were a little worried. He was shaking and his fever was close to 105. Into a lukewarm bath he went and we got ibuprofen into his system asap!

Thankfully, both kids are doing a lot better–just coughing and a little congested. It’s amazing how quickly they can bounce back from sickness. They’re resilient, that’s for sure. We obviously didn’t want to spread any sickness, so we hung out at home all weekend.

I worked on two recipes for the December menu for my business: candy cane cupcakes and hot cocoa cookies.

I have been finding so much joy in the process of creating a menu, recipe testing, photography, and of course baking. I just love it.

We put our Christmas tree up and I’m looking forward to a month of morning coffee and Christmas tree gazing!

We used our hot tub all weekend. Jimmy said he’s excited for our first snowstorm because we wants to watch it from the hot tub. I’m dreaming of pulling the kids on a sled.

Niva likes to be with us at. all. times. so when we went in the hot tub last night, she curled up in a patio chair just to be near us. That was better than the time she jumped in the hot tub when we first got it 🫣 Can you spot her in the picture below?

Sadie decorated a gingerbread house. Mordecai played with our nativity set by the Christmas tree. I also pulled out cookie cutters, fondant, and sprinkles to make Christmas tree pancakes!

We did lots of reading, too. Sadie and I started another Adventures in Fosterland book. Malcolm must have been very interested in the plot because he curled up with us and listened, too!

Jimmy and I introduced Sadie to a classic Christmas movie: Elf. She thought it was hilarious and laughed out loud many times. Did you know this year is the 20th anniversary of Elf? I feel old!

Sadie must have still been wiped out from being sick because as soon as the movie ended, she laid on Jimmy’s lap and fell right asleep. So sweet.

It’s the start of a new week and I am going to miss Jimmy so much today! He was home on Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and then all weekend. I really cherish the days where we can just be a family and hang out.

This week should be a busy one: Niva has a vet appointment for her vaccines, we have school, co-op, Jimmy is getting his hair cut, and Niva has her last training class. I better get my day started!

Tell me about your weekend!

  1. A relaxing weekend sounds just what you all needed after sickness. Glad that Mordecai and Sadie are both on the mend!

    Your Christmas tree looks beautiful.

And the care and thought you put into baking and creating a menu for different seasons is clear. Admirable when you’re in such a busy season of life with two small children. I would definitely be ordering your bakes if I could!

My weekend was busy. As I mentioned, I had a trip to London to stay with a friend and go to the Chanel exhibition. I took so many photos of the beautiful dresses and displays.

Then yesterday we had Aimee’s heart scanned – the vet warned us she has developed a heart murmur, so we saw a cardiologist yesterday who was doing a special heart scan day for a local dog club. Unfortunately she’ll need to be on meds in around a year’s time as she has a significant murmur 😦 But at least the meds will give her a good quality of life and delay heart failure. It’s so hard when your pets get sick, even though she isn’t physically unwell right now. She’s a much-loved little dog. I feel I’m still absorbing this news.

    1. It was just what the doctor ordered! It’s such a relief to see the kids feeling back to their energetic selves. There’s something so sad about a sick child that just lays around when they’re usually running and playing all the times.

Thank you for the compliment on our tree. It’s bringing me so much joy each morning when the world is dark and quiet and I sip my coffee and just stare at it 😊

I wish we lived nearby. I would have you be a recipe taste tester!

A trip to London sounds so posh! The Chanel exhibition would be such a neat thing to see.

I am so sorry about Aimee’s heart murmur. I’m glad the medicine will give her a good quality of life, but like you said, it’s so hard to see them and know something is wrong, even if they are acting okay. Give her a hug for me ❤️

  2. YOUR TREE IS BEAUTIFUL! and your baked treats look (and always taste) amazing!
I’m so sorry Sadie and Deck have had such horrible sicknesses. They’re getting it all out of the way for Christmas!! Love you
