Books to read and small home decor updates

Do you ever get in a reading rut and then you suddenly have like ten books to read? For the past month or so, I just couldn’t seem to find a book to get into, then I found quite a few and now I don’t know which to read first! Here’s my current stack.

Stack of books Present Over Perfect Troublemaker, Winter Street

From top to bottom, I have The City Baker’s Guide to Country Living, Winter Street, My Life as An Amish Wife, Present Over Perfect, and Troublemaker. Definitely an eclectic mix! Which would you read first?

Also on the topic of reading, I read Proverbs in January and just finished Daniel. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read and study Genesis or Psalms next, and I chose Psalms. Love it!

When I haven’t been thinking about books and reading I’ve been working on little home decor updates. I popped into Marshall’s over the weekend and bought a new blanket and basket to hold our blankets.

I put the basket under our end table and I’m hoping Mavis doesn’t chew on the handles! Or the blankets. Or the basket. I can totally see her trying to chew a steel basket 😉

I also got a new quilt for our bed (for only $41!). I’ve been doing updates on our master bedroom overhaul, and we had a white comforter and duvet cover for a while and decided we just couldn’t swing it anymore since two out of three of our pets have black fur. I’ll try and post some pictures soon since we have added a few other things (a storage bench and throw pillows!) over the past few months.

One last decor update: I hung a new wreath on our front door and replaced our welcome mat. It feels so fresh and springy now!

I have been baking a bit over the past few days, too! I had a bag of apples in the fridge that needed to be used up, so I made an apple pie using my mother-in-law’s crust recipe. I also made rice pudding this evening and it was delicious.

I feel like rice pudding is one of those foods I forget about, and then when I see on TV or in an ad in a magazine it I’m like “that sounds so good!” you know?

I literally ate a bowl of it warm with a few raisins sprinkled in because I just couldn’t wait for it to cool off. The verdict? Warm rice pudding is amazing! I used this recipe in case anyone is wondering 🙂

What are you reading/baking/decorating lately?

  1. Wow! What a great post! You know me, I would definitely read the Leah Remini book first (I can borrow that, right? 😂). I also have quite a stack to read, but I’m currently reading ‘Sisters First’ by Jenna and Barbara Bush.
I love the quilt you ordered!!! It’s perfect for your bedroom, and what a deal!!!! Amazon to the rescue ~ as usual. I love the basket and blanket too!! I think I would keep an eye on Mavis (and Malcolm) though — just to be safe 😅
I think our next project is going to be our downstairs half bath— it is in dire need of a reno. I’m hoping you can help me decorate when the time comes!
    Love you
    Madre

    1. Of course you can borrow the Leah Remini book! I’m glad you finished up Sisters First recently and liked it! It was a fun read.

Amen to Amazon to the rescue, haha! And yeah, I always have my eye on those two trouble makers!

I can’t wait to hear how your half bath turns out and will definitely help you decorate it when the time comes!

  2. Those deserts sound and look awesome!!! I wil Gabe to stop and eat some of that apple pie!!!!
    Love

    🙂
    ❤️💕😘

  3. I love the basket! I’ve been looking for a basket to store our blankets in a nice way but haven’t found a good one yet.

I’m currently reading “Before I Go to Sleep” by S.J. Watson and am loving it! I’m a little over halfway and recommend it for sure.

    1. Thanks, Maureen!! I hope you find a basket you like soon! Definitely check TJ Maxx/Marshalls/those types of stores! They always have unique finds at such great prices 🙂

I need to look up Before I Go to Sleep! I feel like I’ve heard of it before and that it was good!!

  4. That pie looks amazing. I love Marshalls/TJ Maxx/Home Goods for home finds like that basket and blanket. Those stores are so fun… it is beside my gym so I often go in there just to avoid traffic craziness and I always find something.

I’m gonna read about those books now because you always have fun book recommendations!

    1. Thank you, Amy!! I agree that Marshalls/TJ Maxx/Home Goods are so much fun. I could spend hours in those places! So nice that you have one by your gym haha!! That would be so dangerous for my wallet!

If you read any of the books I hope you enjoy them!!

  5. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten rice pudding. Is that crazy?

Also, let me know what you think of Present Over Perfect! That’s on my to-read list, but I haven’t gotten to it yet. I loved her Bread and Wine book!

I’m excited to see your next photo update of your room as you guys are updating it. That quilt you chose looks really comfy! And I love the basket you picked for the living room. It’s so pretty! I hope Mavis stays away from it, haha! We used to have a basket of blankets in our living room, but Oreo kept getting IN it on top of the blankets, haha! So we eventually put it in a spot he couldn’t get to it. Oh pets!

    1. Yes, that’s totally crazy!! Well maybe not, but I highly recommend rice pudding!! If you’re not weird about texture, haha.

I will definitely let you know how I like Present Over Perfect! I need to pick up Bread and Wine because I keep hearing really, really great things about it!

I just LOL’d thinking of Oreo just climbing into a basket of blankets! He is such a character. Between him and Baby Girl, you’re probably laughing all day!

  6. I love that basket! And from your previous post, I can’t wait to see what your new bed looks like!

I read Present Over Perfect this summer and it was so good. The chapters are short and topical, so I think you could read that one with another one, because you can pick it up and put it down easily 🙂 Interested to hear about the Leah Remini book! It’s on my to-read list!

    1. Aww, thanks Kylie!!

I can’t wait to dive into Present Over Perfect, especially since you enjoyed it!! Thanks for the tip on being able to read it with other books! I think I may have to start it now!

I’ll definitely let you know about the Leah Remini book!!

  7. I LOVE throws! They make every space so much cozier! I love the one you got! And you have such a great book stack to get through! Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite authors! Happy Reading! 🙂 ❤

    1. Throws for the win!! They really do make everything cozier 🙂

Can’t wait to read the Elin Hilderbrand book now that I know she’s one of your favorite authors!

  8. This post has two of my favorite things: books and home decor! I love how you have decorated your house! You have such great taste! Kona would definitely try to chew on the steel basket also, lol.

    1. Aww, yay! We have some favorite things in common! Thank you for the compliment on our house! That means a lot! It has taken me almost four years to get where we are now, which I know is slow in terms of decorating, but it’s worth it for me to take my time and live in a space we love!!

LOL at Kona trying to chew on a steel basket! I’m glad Mavis isn’t the only one who would try that!

  9. Winter Street or Present-Over-Perfect sound really up my street! I’ve just finished The Hate U Give- I couldn’t recommend enough! Your apple pie looks AMAZING! X
