On Saturday my mom, sister, Jimmy, and I headed out to St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA to run a 5k (for mom & Hannah) and a 10k (for me).
Hannah and I ran this race last year and it meant so much to us to do it again this year. The race was in honor of PA State Trooper Kenton Iwaniec who was killed in 2008 by a drunk driver.
Trooper Iwaniec’s family created the Takeoff Memorial 5k/10k to honor DUI victims, raise awareness about impaired driving, and to encourage the community to have a positive influence in the reduction of impaired driving.
All of the proceeds from the race go towards the purchase of breathalyzers for the PA State Police & other enforcement agencies. I love that the Iwaniec family took a really sad situation and turned it around, into something positive.

Last year the race was very rainy, windy, and cold. This year the race was only overcast and it was fairly warm– in the mid 50’s!
My 10k results– Time: 44:43 (7:13 pace) Place: 1st in the 15-19 age group and 13th overall.
Hannah’s 5k results- Time: 26:42 (8:37 pace) Place: 5th in 15& under age group and 112 overall.

CONGRATS! You’re both amazing runners!
Wow, nice job!
That’s awesome! Congrats :]
It’s always fun to do a race, but even better if you feel like you are supporting a cause and honoring someone with your run :]
Way to go!!! You rock Allie!!
I love the reason behind the race too, what a beautiful way to remember someone 🙂
Girl you were flying! But, I can understand with the beautiful weather and the support from the family. It was a nice temperature to run in, I wish my race Saturday had been that cool! Hannah did great too =). And congratulations on your age group win, I hope you got something nice for it as a prize, maybe?
It’s neat to do a race for a good cause. Always makes me feel good to know my race entry fee is going back to the community somehow.
I did get a nice prize! Instead of a trophy I got a picture frame with a certificate in it that said 10k winner 2012 and I also got flowers 🙂
You are so fast!
WOW congrats on a great race Allie!!!!
Awesome run, dear! I love that it was for a great cause 🙂
Nice Job, Allie! I am sure that trooper Iwaniec’s memory was honored by the race and the cause.
That’s SO great! I’m actually running my first ever 5k this summer, and I can’t wait. 🙂
You are so speedy! Great job! I love the idea of a race in memory of someone!
