Family Hobby, A Giant Unicorn, and Contentment

Could our family hobby be bowling?! We went for the second time in two weeks and had such a great time again. It’s always nice to find an activity we all enjoy and can do!

Halfway through the game, Sadie was asking for dessert and we told her if she beat me, we could get dessert. Once again, Sadie beat me fair and square. HOW!!! So, we went and got ice cream after. That little stinker!

Bowling score

I was proud to have at least beat my two-year-old… by four measly points 😂

Here’s a video of Sadie getting a spare and doing some cool dance moves.

When we got Sadie’s victory ice cream, we did our ritual of heading to our favorite spot and reading books together.

Love this guy! He deals with me calling him, crying and saying “Niva escaped our fence and then when we got her back she almost knocked Mordecai down our basement stairs.” Yes, that happened on Friday and it had me shaken up. Thankfully a fun night of family time, bowling, and ice cream turned the day around 😉

When we got home, Mordecai went to bed and Jimmy and Sadie stayed up to watch the movie Wild Robot. They’re just so cute together. Also, do you spy Sadie’s Sonic the Hedgehog stuffies on the couch?! They’re always nearby!

A Giant Unicorn

Our friend from church texted me this week and said she had a gift to give Sadie. Just out of the blue! How sweet is that? Imagine Sadie’s shock/delight/joy when she received a gigantic stuffed unicorn!! Oh my word, the kids have had so much fun with that unicorn the past few days.

This toy has definitely come in handy on these cold days when we’re cooped up inside 🦄

Contentment

Last but not least for this post, I have to share a quote from the Bible study I’m working through! It’s called Is God Enough for Me? Finding Real Contentment in Christ. It has been so wonderful to study contentment.

Basically, what I’m learning is that we crave worship and if we don’t worship God, we worship all the wrong things in our lives: comfort, shopping, security, power, control, entertainment, sports, our phones, “me time,” and on and on. These things might make us feel content… for a little while. And then they lose their shine and we want the next thing. What we truly want and need is to be with God.

Daily Grace Co. Contentment Bible study

The quote above hit me hard! “Our comfort and contentment is not in knowing God’s plan but in experiencing His presence.”

It’s probably because I’m close to my due date with baby #3 and just have no idea what the coming weeks will look like… but it’s super easy for me to try and find contentment in security or wanting to know God’s plan and how things will play out. But I don’t know what the coming weeks will look like and my contentment is not about my circumstances, it’s about finding my joy and rest and contentment in God’s presence.

Right now in the Bible study, I’m working on memorizing Psalm 16. It’s was written by David, a man who sinned and was imperfect, but is still known as a man after God’s own heart. Side note: I love that about everyone in the Bible… there were many, many imperfect people (except Jesus, he was perfect!) who are still known as amazing people of faith! So, let’s take the pressure off ourselves to be perfect, right?!

Here’s Psalm 16:

Keep me safe, my God,
    for in you I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    apart from you I have no good thing.”
I say of the holy people who are in the land,
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names on my lips.

Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
    you make my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
    even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
You make known to me the path of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,
    with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

How beautiful is that? David was basically saying that without God, he had nothing and that God was his everything. His refuge. He had confidence that no matter what circumstances he faced, if he had God, he could be content. This also makes me think about how Jesus was so trusting in God that He was willing to die on a cross for the sins of the world. Why? Because of His love for us and His trust in God’s plan.

We can trust God, always. We can find our contentment in Him no matter what the circumstances.

Other notes and thoughts from life lately:

  • I took the kids to Dollar Tree this week and told them they could each pick out a snack. Sadie picked Lucky Charms and Mordecai picked pistachios. Aaaaand that’s how different our kids are with food, lol.
  • Speaking of pistachios, I popped into Yankee Candle recently and saw they have a candle called “Pistachio Latte” and it smells so good! I can’t stop thinking about it, lol.
  • I’ve started getting emails for summer camps for Sadie. I even looked into booking some and a few are already sold out… how crazy is that?!

Okay, it’s Saturday evening as I type up this post! I’m not sure what we’ll get up to tonight but I’m sure it will be fun! I want to hear what you’ve been up to this weekend… the last one in February!

  1. that unicorn is HUGE!! Your kids are definitely the queen and king of stuffies. You 4(.9) bowling together is adorable – such a fun thing to do on a Friday night- and topping it off with ice cream makes it even better.

    contentment is so important in our walk with Jesus. We all need to learn and study that (in my case-daily).

    1. It is truly massive LOL. It’s cute that the kids love stuffies!

      Bowling has been such a fun activity for our family in these cold winter weeks lately! Add in ice cream and we’re all happy!
