Mordecai’s First Birthday Party

My heart is so full as I reflect on Mordecai’s first birthday party!

From how wanted he was before he was even conceived, to the joy he has brought us over the last year… I could just cry from the happiness of it all. God has been so kind to our family.

We had Mordecai’s party at our church on the Saturday after he turned one. Around 60 family and friends came to celebrate our little guy and it was really special just thinking about how all the people gathered have known Mordecai before he was born, witnessed his first year of life, and have loved and encouraged our family.

First birthday party themes are fun because babies don’t *quite* have interests yet, so mom and dad can pick the theme for them 😉

For some reason, I really wanted to do a firefighter theme, so that’s what we did and man did I have fun with it! I think my favorite part was taking pictures of Mordecai’s face and adding firefighter hats to make cupcake toppers.

For his cake, I wanted to do something cute, but not too messy with colored frosting so I made a white cake with vanilla buttercream and decorated it with fondant flames, his name, and the number “1.”

I think it’s safe to say that he enjoyed his cake! He hugged it, put his face right up to it, and chowed down. I loved watching him enjoy it. We got some video clips of him eating it, which are at the end of this post 😬

Aside from the cake and cupcakes, we ordered food from a local Italian restaurant and ate pasta, meatballs, barbecue pulled pork, salad, and chicken. It was quite the feast!

I made three different kinds of cupcakes, because why not?! Chocolate + peanut butter frosting, spice cake with vanilla buttercream, and snickerdoodle cupcakes with cinnamon vanilla frosting.

The kids all got to break open a piñata and play in my parents’ bounce house.

Mordecai received some awesome gifts: fire trucks, much needed clothes and pajamas, a baby bike, and a hot wheels track!

Also of note, as we were setting up for the party, Sadie was playing with Mordecai in the church nursery. She came busting into the kitchen screaming “Mordecai is walking!” and sure enough, he was using a walker toy to take his first steps. I added a little clip in the video below.

Whew, what a special day! I’m still on cloud nine from celebrating our special little guy. He is such a gift to our family ❤️

    1. I had waaaay too much fun with the face cupcake toppers haha. I told everyone I know that I would make themed cupcake toppers for their birthday because it was just too funny seeing them.

It truly was a special day and having all those loved ones with us was what really made it!

  1. I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE DECK IS 1!!!
His party was amazing, and I’m sure we will look back on your blog and laugh at so many things (the weird eyed stuffies).
Him hugging his smash cake was hilarious!!! He loves sweets, that’s for sure!! I’m glad we decided to bring the bounce house for all the older kids that attended – it was definitely a big hit!
I think Decky had a blast too!!!
    Love you,
    Madre

    1. The janky eye stuffies!! Those were too funny.

The smash cake was one of my favorite parts! And the bounce house was definitely a big hit for the big kids 🙂

Thank you for all of your help! Love you!

  2. Happy (very belated) first birthday to Mordecai!! This past year has been such a blur for us so it’s blowing my mind that he is one already (and that’s just around the corner for us). What a gift it is to have this sweet answered prayer in your lives every day! So glad all of his people were able to be together to celebrate! ❤
