Sick Daze

Whew, it feels like it has been a while since I last posted. Jimmy and I both came down with a cold on Wednesday and have been pretty miserable since then.

It’s just your classic head cold: sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, and that foggy feeling. Thankfully we haven’t had fevers (at least I don’t think?!), so I don’t think it’s the flu. We’re just in a sick daze.

We’ve never been sick at the same time, so we’re kind of enjoying being in the trenches together. I told Jimmy the other night that there’s no one else I’d rather be sick with than him šŸ™‚

We even went on a little “date” to Walgreens to get medicine, cough drops, and other necessities (aka chocolate!). It has been a little rough figuring out what medicine is safe to take during pregnancy and I kind of miss being able to take Nyquil at night, haha.

I’m hoping we’re on the upswing now. I felt okay enough to do same baking today. That has to be a good sign, right?! I made chocolate cherry challah from this cookbookĀ and highly recommend it.

The pets have been giving us lots of love and attention. I really feel like Malcolm knows when we don’t feel well because he sleeps on top of us when we nap and is extra snuggly. So sweet. Mavis and Lola stand by the couch, and Mavis puts her head in my hand and stares deeply into my eyes. She’s something else.

Well, I’m going to close out this post and stop talking about being sick! I’m actually looking for a birthday gift for my sister-in-law. She loves cats, dogs, coffee, and Penn State. If anyone has any gift ideas, send them my way!

How do you treat the common cold?

  1. Do you have the Ovia Pregnancy app? There is a medicine search option on that app that I found helpful for checking what I could and shouldnā€™t take when pregnant. Once you have the baby, I highly recommend the LactMed app. Itā€™s great for knowing what is okay when nursing.

As for my go-to remedy when sick – warm lemon water with honey. So soothing! Feel better soon!

Gift idea: we have New Mexico Pinon coffee here. Iā€™m not a coffee person so I donā€™t know how good it is but it would be different at least. Let me know if you want me to send you some! Or wait! Itā€™s the 21st century – I bet they have a website. Hold please – Iā€™ll check. https://nmpinoncoffee.com See what you think!

    1. I do have the Ovia pregnancy app! Love it! I will check out the medicine search option! Thanks šŸ™‚ Iā€™m also going to download the LactMed app in the future… I didnā€™t even think about medicine + breastfeeding. Eek! So much to think about! Love your cold remedy… that sounds amazing for a sore throat!

Haha to it being the 21st Century and them having a website. You crack me up! Canā€™t wait to check it out! If I order them some, Iā€™ll have to get Jimmy and I some too!!

  2. I’m glad it was just a little cold and nothing else too serious for you Allie! It’s surprising to me there’s no pregnancy safe NyQuil type medicine on the market at this point. Pregnant ladies need sleep when sick too!

You could get your SIL a cute Penn State mug and then a “fancy” coffee. I always find that TJ Maxx/Marshals/Home Goods have some really interesting and cool looking coffees in them. They aren’t crazy expensive either and not the typical things you find in a grocery store.

    1. Thanks, Maureen! Crazy about the NyQuil, right?! Maybe Iā€™ll invent pregnancy safe NyQuil since I want it so bad haha!!

Thank you so much for the mug + fancy coffee idea!!! Now I have an excuse to go hunting around TJ Maxx/Marshallā€™s/Home Goods!

  3. Being sick while you’re pregnant is so tough! As is being sick while nursing (as Amy pointed out)! It’s hard to know what is safe to take. One of my best friends is a pharmacist so she has been my go-to person for questions about what is safe to take while pregnant/nursing. I did use the Ovia app to check medications one time like Amy suggested and it was accurate! Anyway, I definitely feel for you for being sick! Especially since Jimmy is sick too and can’t take care of you. Though I think it’s sweet how you guys are finding little joys in being in the trenches together. šŸ˜‰ I’m so glad all of your sweet pets are there to look after you guys, though. Mavis has such soulful eyes!

    1. It really is an extra layer of toughness to be sick and pregnant! I canā€™t imagine what itā€™s like while nursing since the baby is on the outside, your his/her food source, and youā€™re sick! Crazy! How awesome that you have a best friend who is a pharmacist!! Iā€™ve definitely been asking Hannah lots of questions since sheā€™s in nursing school and she has been super helpful, and I think she likes being challenged and using her nursing skills!

I agree with you on Mavisā€™ eyes!! They are so soulful! I love it when she just stares into my eyes!

  4. The only time I feel that there is merit in “misery loves company” is when you and your friend are sick together. It’s much better to be sick with someone else šŸ™‚

  5. I hope you feel better soon! Stinks that you were both sick at the same time because nobody could be the caregiver, and you had to find meds you could take being pregnant. Hopefully the cold leaves your house soon.

  6. I hope you’re feeling better by now! Being sick at the same time can be so hard because neither one can help take care of the other, lol. But, then again, it is kind of sweet because you are both there to commiserate with the other haha. I used to take NyQuill/DayQuill when I got colds until recently when my doctor super stressed that it’s better to avoid combination drugs. He was quite insistent that it’s better to take something like Mucinex for exact symptoms. Sometimes I do miss the sleep aid, though!!

    1. Thank you, Tialla! I agree that it can be so tough, but also sweet being sick at the same time since we’re sick buddies haha!

I had no idea about the NyQuill vs. Mucinex! Thanks for that info!

  7. Aw, hope you are 100% by now!!! ā¤ Being pregnant, I would recommend to talk to your doctor whenever sick, just to be safe. For me, I usually use echinacea tea, vitamin C (like emergenC), and hot water, lemon, and honey. But like I said… I don't know how safe echinacea is when pregnant (or with that dose of Vitamin C). As a nurse, I am being extra careful in covering my butt as you can tell. LOL. But I am glad you are feeling better. Praying for a 100% healthy rest of your pregnancy!

    1. Thank you, Mackenzie! I cannot wait to just feel completely normal and not like an elephant is sitting on my sinus cavity LOL. I’ll have to look into echinacea tea during pregnancy! I love me some tea šŸ™‚

      Thanks Nurse Mackenzie šŸ™‚
