Life Lately

Hi! Thanks for everyone’s comments on my last post. I really appreciate all of the kind words. I think it’s good to reflect on rough patches and see that God is always good, even through the hard (and sometimes scary) times.

I feel like it’s been a while since I discussed my life lately?! So, here’s what’s been going on.

Fun stuff

I have been pretty social lately! I’m definitely an introverted homebody, so this is fun/exhausting for me. Jimmy and I have been traversing Pittsburgh constantly, going to places like Construction Junction (such a neat place!), Bakery Square, and the Pittsburgh Home and Garden Show. We’ve also been busy with our church’s young adult group. On Sunday, we all went to a delicious Indian restaurant for lunch and went bowling afterwards.

Yes, I went bowling in a skirt…

We celebrated my mom’s birthday this past weekend, too! We grilled some burgers and chicken, and I took my mom to see Madeline (anyone remember that movie?) as a ballet at the Carnegie Performing Arts Center. It was so cute, and now I want to watch the movie again. It was one of my favorites growing up. It was great to spend time with my parents over a meal and just hang out.

Reading

Since I graduated, I have been reading so much! I read a lot in college, but a lot of my reading time was spent with my nose in a textbook. Some of my favorite books that I’ve read so far this year are: The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Steadman, My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick, All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner.

I started listening to audio books in January, and it’s totally amped up my reading life, haha. Why did I just start listening to audio books this year?! I’m also currently reading Delancey by Molly Wizenberg, Jemima J by Jane Green, and The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Enjoying them all!

Pet Sitting

I have been pet sitting quite a bit lately. I didn’t really think this time of year would be busy, but it’s been so busy that I have to constantly turn people down because I don’t have enough time or already have too many clients. If I always had this many inquiries, I could definitely pet sit full-time, but I think it’s kind of risky as a full-time job because it’s not steady work all the time, you know?

I absolutely love it, though. My days literally revolve around dogs. Feeding them, walking them, picking up their poop, grooming them, giving them medications, and snuggling them. It doesn’t get much better than that! Except for the poop part, maybe?

When I pet sit, I sometimes have the dogs stay in my home, and other times the owners prefer me to visit their home. I don’t know how much more I’ll have dogs stay in my home because Lola isn’t always crazy about having another dog receive my attention in “her” home. She’s definitely an alpha dog. Most of the time, though, she loves having a new buddy to hang out and walk with. I’m also pretty sure our neighbors are confused when they see a golden retriever in our yard one week, then a Siberian husky, then an English bulldog, then a schnoodle, and on and on, haha.

Baking/Cooking

Between my regular job and pet sitting, I haven’t been baking as much as I’d like to. I always make a loaf of sandwich bread for lunches for the week (Jimmy and I both pack), and a batch of homemade peanut butter and granola for snacking. The one “fun” thing I’ve baked lately is cinnamon chip cookies.

As far as dinners go, I sometimes prep a casserole on a Monday, and then we eat it throughout the week. Easy peasy. Thursday night is homemade pizza night. I like to fake quote Mean Girls and say “On Thursdays, we eat pizza.” and Jimmy is always confused. Good times 😉

The makings of an Italian sausage casserole

Alrighty, this post is getting pretty long, so I’m going to wrap it up here! I’m off to the dentist today to have a cracked filling fixed and a cavity filled. I am absolutely terrified of the dentist and Jimmy and I don’t have dental insurance. Double whammy. But, I always try to be thankful that I get to go to the dentist. I’m very blessed to live in a country with great dental care and plenty of novocaine!

Have a great day 🙂

  1. You and I are always one in the same with the house/pet sitting I swear!! I am going to be house/dog sitting for a new dog starting Friday (just for 5 days) and then the very next day I will be pet sitting for a cat for the entire month of April. Just checking in once a day, but this is so fun! I have definitely had thoughts of it being a business. but yes risky indeed! HAHA.

I love that you bowled in a skirt, you were probably super comfortable too!! Pants are…too…restricting!

    1. We totally are and I love it! It’s really such a fun side job that I would love to do full time, but yeah… risky! I think about it CONSTANTLY haha.

YES to bowling in a skirt. I was super comfy 🙂

    1. Thank you! It went well!! Between my check up (from the week before) and the fillings it was over $500, buuuut I’m happy to have a healthy mouth and will gladly pay that amount now vs. thousands in the future if I didn’t take care of everything, you know?!

I would definitely recommend The Light Between Oceans! It took me a while to get into it and understand the Australian AND lighthouse lingo, but once I got past it, I enjoyed it 🙂

  2. I hope things go well at the dentist- it’s great to hear from you and I’m glad you and Jimmy are doing well. It sounds like you and your mom had fun celebrating her birthday, too!

  3. Good luck at the dentist! Not having coverage is definitely the worst. I am dreading the fact I’m off my parents coverage in January. Woof. Speaking of woof, you have the greatest job EVER. I wish I could pet sit but there aren’t a lot of inquiries around here.

    1. Thank you, Laur!! It went as well as any dentist appointment could go, haha. And thank you! I looove it!! You should check out care.com or rover.com if you’re looking for pet sitting jobs!!

  4. I read Jemina J a couple weeks ago and I warn you, it started me on a spiral of sappy love stories. I have read almost all of Jane Green’s books and love them! I think I try to live through the characters =P I’ll take her over Fifty Shades of Grey any day!!

    1. Hahah!! I love Jane Green books! I read my first Jane Green book a few months ago and I enjoyed it, so I figured I’d like Jemima J (and I did!). Yes, she’s much better than Fifty Shades of Grey LOL.

  5. I love that you make your own sandwich bread. How awesome is that?!? AND the best part (or, maybe the second best part, since I’m sure the amazing flavor wins hands down) is that you know what’s going into it. Breads have a surprising amount of chemicals in them!
Life sounds busy… but good! 🙂
I’m totally the same, by the way. Hanging out with friends or around a lot of people is a TON of fun… but I’m usually exhausted after and need some quiet time. 🙂

    1. Awww, thank you Nicole! And you’re right! Did you hear about Subway’s bread apparently having plastic chemicals that go into yoga mats in it?! I heard that and I was like… what?! Bread should just be flour, yeast, salt. and oil/butter?! Anyways…. haha. I’m glad we agree on being social… it’s fun, but I definitely get worn out and need that quiet 🙂

  6. Good to hear you have been involved with some fun things lately! I like bowling depending on what kind of day it is, haha. Meaning, if I happen to strike out, then I love bowling, if not, I find it “boring” 😛

Dog-sitting sounds like such a fun job, but I imagine it must come with a ton of responsibility. But at least you get paid to hang out with some cute furballs!

    1. Hahah, I am the same way with bowling! I used to go a lot (in the earlier days of my blog!) and would get frustrated when I had a bad game. Now I’m like…. ehh… whatever!

Pet sitting really is fun! It’s a huge responsibility, but I just try my best and thank God I am insured!

  7. Dog sitting is so much fun! I’ve been doing a lot of that recently too, it’s such a nice way to make some extra money and help out friends (or friends of friends). On another note, your cookies look so good!

  8. The ballet you and your mom saw… wow! How special. I used to dance ballet and my love for it will go on as long as I live, I’m sure. Homemade cookies, yummy. I’ve tried baking some muffins lately. They weren’t ‘the county fair winners’ but at least I did something in the room called kitchen.

    1. It was so special! Ballet is just beautiful, and I love watching it. I always wanted to join ballet when I was in middle/high school but I felt like it was “too late” at that point. I still would love to try LOL.

  9. the light between oceans is such a wonderful book — i love love loved it. sad, yes, but also incredibly beautiful and romantic? i read it right after i had a miscarriage, and so the story really resonated with me. also – those cookies? i could eat about 12 right now (consequence of being very, very pregnant) — cookies and books and changes 🙂

    1. Oh my goodness, me too! I was HOOKED on that book once I got into it. It was one of the best ones I’ve read in a while! I’m sure it was super special to you!! I should send you some cookies!
