Outer Banks: Meekins Field, Duck Donuts, and Frog Catching

Okay, this is my last Outer Banks travel post for everyone who is getting sick of these ๐Ÿ˜‰ Our last full day in the OBX was pretty relaxed!

I started the day by finishing my loom knit pumpkin (with help from my mom!). It definitely wasn’t perfect, but I’m so happy I did it! I made that little lopsided, imperfect pumpkin from a ball of yarn!

We also finished up our rock painting project (we used this kit and loved it) so we could add to the rock collection on my parents’ street. Clearly, I can’t go a week without crafting or baking ๐Ÿ˜‚

Once we got our projects done, we headed off to Meekins Field in Kill Devil Hills so the kids could play on the playground there! It was in the 70s and sunny, which felt great. I’m going to miss all this sunshine when we’re back in Pittsburgh!

The famous Outer Banks donut shop, Duck Donuts, was within walking distance from the playground so we obviously had to go ๐Ÿ˜‰

Once I laid Mordecai down for his nap, we went out by the pool to do Sadie’s schoolwork. We had just sat down when she said “I think there’s a frog in the pool filter!” and sure enough, there was a frog spinning around in there.

Sadie pulled the frog out (totally surprised me!) and was so into it. She wanted to know what type of habitat it needed, how she could help it, etc.! This week has been full of discoveries for her: a sea urchin, ghost crabs, sea shells, and more! I love how much we get outside and just explore for the fun of it when we’re here.

After the frog excitement, we did her schoolwork (so thankful we can do school anywhere!) and then headed out to one of my mom’s favorite stores here, Parrot Bay. We picked up a shirt for a friend back at home and then we headed back to the beach house for dinner and packing.

Our last thing on the agenda was one more beach visit! The kids didn’t want to leave the sand and surf. Once they get down on the beach they just play and play. I love it.

And that’s a wrap! We left the next day (currently typing up this post as we drive home) and it will be so hard to get back into the swing of things at home!! It felt like we just had a week of summer, so it’s going to be strange to go back to falling leaves and the month of October in Pittsburgh. I am so looking forward to seeing Jimmy, though!

As with all these posts, here’s a vlog of our day ๐Ÿ™‚

Is there a hobby you can’t go a week without doing?

  1. THAT PUMPKIN! I love it, I love it!! It’s so cute. I totally get the “it doesn’t look perfect” thought process because I do the same thing, but as an outsider I think it looks awesome.

The rocks look great too! and the donuts of course. I’m glad you all had such a great trip!! I hope your homecoming was just as sweet.

A hobby I cannot go without doing is exercise. Does that count? Is that considered a hobby? LOL. Otherwise I don’t think I have a weekly hobby. Reading definitely counts, but I have gone a week before without doing that when life gets busy!

    1. Aww, thank you!! That means so much! I know it’s laughable to someone who knits on the regular but I’m so happy with it haha.

Coming home was so sweet. The kids were so, so happy to see Jimmy! And me too!

      Exercise totally counts!

  2. I guess this really got me thinking that I donโ€™t have a weekly hobby except spin class and weight training at our local Y, and I did go a week without themโ€ฆ but I think I need to find a cool, fun hobby that can be done anywhere (although I do love reading memoirs)

meekin park is such a great addition to the local area – and within yards of our houseโ€ฆ and then Duck Donuts right there by the park! Canโ€™t go wrong with that scenario.

Iโ€™m so glad we saved the frog in the filter (I already forgot his name ๐Ÿซค๐Ÿซค)

the last night on the beach was so much fun. Seeing the kids both so happy and more comfortable there was the best!

it was a great trip- canโ€™t wait for our next one in the very near future!

    love you,

    madre

    1. Reading is totally a hobby you can do anywhere! We’ll find ya another one if you want ๐Ÿ™‚

That plaza across the street really is clutch with all the good stores/playground!

I love that the kids got so comfortable at the beach by the end of the week ๐Ÿ™‚

Sadie said the frog’s name was “Frashi” lol.

      Love you!

  3. Given the storms of the last few weeks, you probably picked the right moment to head off from NC. Dreadful events. I’m impressed with Sadie being so willing to catch a frog with her bare hands. Lots of kids would be “oh yuck” about it. She has plenty of spirit!

    1. Ugh, yes. I feel like there’s just always something waiting to happen with hurricanes. I was so surprised by Sadie catching a frog, too!! She wasn’t into catching crabs but was okay with a frog?! Oh well!
