The Coolest Order and a Silver and Gold 5k

I’ve been taking the kids to Jimmy’s work a few days each week to do school there. One day, we brought in stickers and paint so Sadie could decorate some work gloves for a few employees and she also put stickers on a welding helmet for one of the workers.

I wonder if she will do any welding when she grows up! This week she told me she wants to be a gymnast.

Mordecai… I think he just wants to be healthy?! We were back at urgent care for the second time in two weeks. This time, he had another ear infection and hand, foot, and mouth disease. Poor guy is all blistered up.

We’ve done lots of relaxing at home. Mordecai finally kicked his fever once he got a second antibiotic. He’s not happy about taking it but we just do our best.

Niva was more than happy to snuggle Mordecai to help him feel better!

At the end of the week we went to the Pittsburgh Zoo. I just love it there.

I got the coolest order this week. Our mailman knocked on our door and handed me $20. He said “Can you bake me some random things and just surprise me?” I had so much fun with that. He got three flavors of granola, chocolate covered Oreos, cupcakes, and chocolate chip pretzel cookies.

I put together some Mother’s Day chocolate covered Oreos to add to my Etsy shop. I plan on making some cupcakes today! I’m going to offer them locally for the month of May and they’re going to be Mother’s Day-themed: lemon + raspberry. I feel like those flavors scream mom.

Guess what we did this weekend?! My mom and I ran a 5k together! We did the same one we ran together last year and it was awesome again.

We both ran times we were happy with! I ran a 21:55 (7:04 pace), which beat last year’s time of 22:39 and was only five seconds off of my best ever time in 2011. I was definitely huffing and puffing and tired after the race… but it was a good tired 😜

My mom got first in the 60+ age group! She really wanted to, and she did it! So proud of her. She ran a 30:30 (9:50 pace). Our times were good for silver (for me) and gold (for my mom) in our age groups.

After our race, the kids did a self-timed 40 yard dash called Marshall’s Mini Marathon. It was cute seeing Sadie run in her first little race! All in all, it was a great way to spend a Saturday morning.

Other notes from life lately:
-> I switched Sadie’s reading curriculum. We were using The Good and The Beautiful Language Arts, but it was like pulling teeth. I just ordered All About Reading Level 1, so we will see how that goes!
-> Niva has two therapy visits this week: one to our favorite school for Deaf children and one to our homeschool co-op!
-> I’m going to be making cow-themed cupcakes for my friend’s baby shower. I’m so excited to practice. I’ll post some pictures if they turn out ok 😊

Alright I’m going to end this post here. I hope you have a great day whenever you’re reading this!

What’s your favorite thing to do in your town?

Did you have a favorite subject in school?

  1. That is such a good running time! I’m really impressed. I can’t believe you can run that fast, especially while being a hands-on mom who takes good care of two little ones. Also, I love the mailman’s surprise order. It seems like great value for $20 and I’m sure it was delicious.

    1. Thank you so much!! It was cool to think running in my 30s is just as good as running in my teens and 20s!! And seeing my kids at the finish line was such a boost 🙂

Hahah I probably gave the mailman a very discounted order but he deserves it for delivering all sorts of packages and he always gives Niva bones! He said his favorite thing was the cookies!

  2. Poor Mordecai! I hope he’s on the mend soon.

Those running times are great, and how fun that you and your mum can both run together 🙂 Lewis is going to run alongside his mum in the next marathon. They ran the most recent marathon together but separately as they were both going for their fastest possible times.

The baking all sounds amazing. I agree, lemon-raspberry is a very appropriate Mother’s Day flavour 🙂

Enjoy the therapy visits this week. And I hope the new reading curriculum for Sadie is more enjoyable for you both!

    1. Thank you!! Unfortunately he ended up with a stomach bug on top of everything. Unless it had to do with the hand foot and mouth thing. Regardless, the little guy can’t catch a break! Hopefully the start of May will bring him good health haha.

Thanks for the compliment on my running! The best part was definitely doing the same race with my mom and being able to talk about the course afterwards and cheer each other on along the race as we passed each other at different points. I love that Lewis and his mom run together! I hope their next marathon is amazing!

Yay! I am glad you think lemon-raspberry is a mom-esque flavor. I was typing that post up and thinking “Does this make sense?” haha.

Can’t wait for the therapy visits! The first one is today. We got the reading curriculum in the mail yesterday and I put everything together and read through. I’m intimidated and excited!

      1. Aww he seems to be having a tough time 😦 I guess it’s always easier to pick up any other viruses and bugs when you’ve already been unwell. I hope the warmer weather signals the end of virus season!

It must be lovely to have a shared hobby and compare notes. The running bug is infectious! I’d like to be able to run, but I think sticking to walking / hiking is best to avoid the impact on my joints. I have had some thoughts about possibly doing a long-distance ‘ultra’ trail walk while Lewis is running it, though, so who knows? That could be a future option maybe!

      2. Thankfully he is back to his happy self! I am too hoping warmer weather = no more sickness haha!

It is really fun to share hobbies! I love your idea of doing an ultra trail walk while Lewis runs! That would be such a fun experience for both of you and prevent damage on your joints!

  3. Our race was awesome, and for such a great cause. I love supporting local fire departments!

I’m glad you guys were able to make a trip to the zoo as a family! It is an awesome zoo, and I also enjoy going there.

I’m praying so hard for Deck – he just isn’t catching a break from these crazy illnesses going around.

The mailman story cracks me up!! He will be pleasantly surprised and happy with his cool order!

I guess walking at the local park here in plum/monroeville is prob one of my fave things to do. It’s always so beautiful, and well maintained.

My favorite subject in school was probably science, because it actually kept my ADHD self interested.

Hoping Niva’s visits go well! So proud of the two of you.

    Love you,

    Madre

    1. Yes, me too! I had such a great time and I’m so glad we could run it!

The zoo was great! We should go together! We have some tickets to use up before June 😬

Thank you for praying for Decky. Poor little guy has been through the wringer. Also praying Sadie doesn’t catch anything.

The mailman said his favorite thing was the cookies!

You do have a very nice (and huge) park in Plum/Monroeville!!

I had no idea you were into science! So cool.

Thanks for the well wishes for Niva’s visits this week!

      Love you so much 💕

    1. Thank you!

That’s an amazing time Pree! I am always impressed that you can easily run SO MANY distances from the 5k to 26.2 and do it so well and injury-free. I need to know your running secrets hahah.
