Outer Banks: Mini Golfing, a Spider Bite, and Catching Crabs

We had quite the fun and random day on Wednesday! We started off the day by enjoying some warm sunshine on the beach.

Sadie made her own DIY sand sensory bin by hiding seashells in a sandcastle mold among sand, driftwood, and seaweed!

I picked up a pumpkin loom knitting kit and got to work on that! I’ve never made something like that before, so it’s really exciting and hard! I love learning new things, especially in the realm of crafting.

While Mordecai napped, Sadie and I did her school work. I was sitting next to her and noticed she had a classic bulls-eye rash on her arm 😕

I called her pediatrician and they wanted to see her that afternoon. This was obviously an issue since we were 500 miles from home. They told me they would call back with either a prescription for antibiotics (assuming it was a tick bite), or a recommendation to see a doctor down here in North Carolina.

While we waited for the call back, we decided to paint rocks for the local painted rock collection on my parents’ street here.

The doctor’s office called me back and told us to go to urgent care before the day was over, so off we went to a pediatric urgent care in Nags Head! The doctor there checked Sadie out and she had a fever, really red throat, and then that weird rash going on.

The doctor checked Sadie for step throat with a rapid test and it was thankfully negative. She then told us she thought the rash was from a spider bite and prescribed Sadie a steroid cream. Sadie thankfully was acting normal and didn’t seem sick. She has her yearly checkup when we get back to Pittsburgh, so we’ll be able to talk to her doctor more then.

Kind of a wild afternoon! After that, we picked up dinner from Outer Banks Brewing Station (again!) and then went mini golfing at Lost Treasure in Hill Devil Hills. We had the best experience there. We arrived at 6:10 pm and found out they had closed at 6:00 pm. The woman working at the counter told us we could go ahead through the course and that she would stay a little late while we finished. She then told us to grab a toddler golf club for Mordecai! How sweet was that?!

The kids had the best time! It was really nice to go through the course without crowds, too. We weren’t waiting for anyone in front of us to finish and we didn’t feel pressure from anyone behind us.

After mini golfing, we drove home and grabbed flashlights and a bucket to go to the beach and catch ghost crabs! Sadie was so excited for this and oh my word did we have fun. That was easily my favorite part of our whole trip. Just imagine three adults and two kids on the beach scrambling around and yelling and trying to catch crabs. Well, you don’t have to imagine too much because it’s in the vlog at the end of the post 😜

We caought about 9-10 crabs (by we, I mean me and my dad haha) and the kids loved peeking at them in the bucket and then letting them go before we left.

And that was how we spent our Wednesday! The beach, urgent care, mini golfing, and crabbing–definitely a random but very fun day.

  1. the pumpkin loom was so cute- but I’m pretty sure I would have wadded up the entire ball of yarn and called it a day… but you’re much more patient and crafty than I am – and it turned out adorable!

the spider bite was def an unexpected and scary portion of our trip- I’m so glad you’re so vigilant and immediately took care of Sadie by getting her seen by a local professional (whom I would highly recommend!)

mini golfing also turned out to be a lot of fun- just seeing Sadie and Deck’s excitement during all 18 holes was the sweetest.

Those ghost crabs tho – that was hilarious. I’m wondering if the local beachfront residents thought we were absolutely insane. It truly must have been a sight to see – and hear 😂

    love you,

    1. Hahaha, it was hard work! I know it’s probably goofy looking to someone who crochets but I am so happy with it! Thanks for your help!

Wasn’t the spider bite so strange?! I’m curious what Sadie’s home doctor will say this week! So glad we had a great experience in Nags Head at the pediatric urgent care. That was awesome! Thanks for coming with us 🙂

Sadie and Deck were HYPE at mini golf. What a special experience being there after they closed, too!

The ghost crabs were my FAVORITE part of the whole trip!

      Love you!

    1. She really was! Our doctor at home thinks it’s a tick bite so she’s being treated for Lyme disease. I don’t know what to think! And as for the clothes… not really haha. She loves her some Hello Kitty!
