Driving, Arriving, and Enjoying the Outer Banks

We made our annual pilgrimage to the Outer Banks, NC!

We decided to leave around 9:30 pm on a Tuesday, drove all night, and arrived at my parent’s beach house at 5:30 am on Wednesday. The kids did really well on the drive and pretty much all of us slept except for poor Jimmy who drove the whole way. He drank two energy drinks and took a quick nap when we arrived. What a trooper.

We arrived to a full house–my parents and sister’s family were all already there and had been for almost a week. Imagine Sadie’s delight when she woke up at the beach and went straight into days of playtime with her cousins!

We started off our first day at the beach. Mordecai was timid around the water, but loved the sand. Sadie loved it all!

In the evening, we got dinner at the Black Pelican in Kitty Hawk and then took the older kids mini golfing at Lost Treasure in Kill Devil Hills. Jimmy and I made sure to get in some mini golf, too. Our fave!

Our next day started at the local splash pad and park. Once again, Sadie loved it and Mordecai was slightly leery haha. He just got lots of snuggles from everyone!

We hung out by my parents’ pool in the afternoon and then went to the Avalon Fishing Pier and beach in the evening. It’s always amazing to walk all the way out on a pier and see the ocean all around you. The Avalon Fishing Pier has been wiped out by hurricanes so many times it’s a wonder it’s still standing. We have so many memories on this pier, dating back from when I was Sadie’s age and younger!

We walked onto the beach by the pier afterwards and I just loved watching the kids enjoy the ocean.

The Outer Banks is definitely one of our happy places! I’ll be back in my next post with more adventures. The next day of our trip was my birthday and mine and Jimmy’s 10th wedding anniversary ❤️

  1. Beautiful!! This looks like a very happy place and I’m delighted you have the family tradition of visiting with your loved ones. The kids are getting so big. Sadie is a budding photographer – the first picture is great.

    1. It’s definitely our happy place! There’s something special about having a place that we come back to year after year 💜

I have been pleasantly surprised by Sadie’s photography skills lately! It’s definitely nice to be able to have her capture photos of Jimmy and I, too, so we don’t have to take selfies all the time anymore, lol.

  2. definitely my happy place too! It’s so relaxing, and also full of fun family things to do and enjoy. It was awesome having you guys here for a couple of days with your sis and family ~ I LOVE seeing the cousins play together and make fun memories at the beach.

  3. I love anywhere with sunshine and a beach! As long as it’s not *too* hot. Maui is still one of my all-time favorite places. Lovely photos!
