Easy Baked Donut Holes – Dunkin’ Munchkin Copycat

Life lately has been a little sweeter thanks to these homemade baked donut holes! If you love Dunkin’ Munchkins, I think you’re going to love this easy copycat recipe. They’re soft, light-as-air, and coated in sugar—just like the ones you’d grab at the drive-thru, only made right in your own kitchen.

The best part? These donut holes are baked instead of fried. They don’t require a fryer or specialty donut pan—just a mini muffin pan. They’re perfect for a quick family treat or special breakfast. My kids devour them warm from the oven, and I love that they come together with simple ingredients I always have on hand.

Homemade copycat Dunkin' Donuts Munchkins

Donut Batter Ingredients
1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons (36g) brown sugar, packed
2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, softened
2 tablespoons (25g) vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/3 cups (160g) all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup (113g) milk

Donut Topping

8 tablespoons (70g) butter, melted
2/3 cup (124g) granulated sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 425°F and lightly grease a mini muffin pan.
2. In a large bowl, whisk the sugars, butter, oil, and salt until smooth.
3. Add the egg and vanilla and whisk until combined. Set aside.
4. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and baking soda. Whisk to combine.
5. Add half of the dry ingredients to the wet and mix until just combined. Add half of the milk.
6. Stir in the rest of the dry ingredients and the last of the milk. Mix until the batter just comes together—a few lumps are better than an over-mixed batter!
7. Use a heaping tablespoon to scoop the batter into the mini muffin pan (I found a tablespoon cookie scoop to work well!). This should make around a dozen donut holes if your kids don’t dip their fingers into the batter like mine do 😉
8. Bake for 7 to 9 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
9. While the donuts bake, get your topping ready: melt the butter in a small microwave-safe bowl. In another small bowl, whisk together the cinnamon and sugar.
10. Once the donut holes have finished baking, remove them from the oven and use a fork to dip them—one at a time–into the butter and then the sugar mixture. Toss to coat in the sugar mixture and move your donuts to a wire rack to finish cooling. Enjoy!

Storage Notes: You can store your leftover donuts in an airtight container for two days—if they last that long!

How to Make Donut Holes at Home: Tips, Tricks & FAQs for Perfect Baked Donuts

  • Don’t over-mix the batter – a few lumps are a-okay; over-mixing makes the donuts dense.
  • Use room-temperature ingredients – soften your butter and have your egg and milk at room temperature for a smoother batter.
  • Use a cookie scoop – this ensures you get evenly sized donut holes that bake uniformly.
  • Check on your donuts at the 7 minute baking mark – every oven bakes differently. Your donuts might be done at 7 minutes or closer to 9.
  • Coat while warm – dip in butter and sugar right out of the oven for the best coating.
  • Flavor variations – try adding cocoa, pumpkin spice, or a dash of nutmeg to the batter. Get creative!
  • Sugar coating ideas – mix apple pie spice, nutmeg, or pumpkin spice into the sugar for flavor twists.
  • Reheat gently – 10–15 seconds in the microwave brings back that fresh-baked warmth and flavor.
  • Can I make these gluten-free? – Yes, substitute with a 1-to-1 gluten-free flour blend such as Bob’s Red Mill.
  • Can I bake them larger than mini muffin size? – Absolutely. You just need to add additional baking time, around 3-5 minutes.
